Sophia's First Day of Kindergarten!
Sophia started kindergarten today! I can't believe that she is old enough to go to kindergarten. It seems like just yesterday Erik and I met Sophia for the first time in Chengdu, China! Even though Daddy wasn't here this morning to send Sophia off to kindergarten, he bought her a special double chocloate chip muffin to eat for breakfast! Sophia said she likes kindergarten and is ready to go back tomorrow! She was very excited that she got a star on her behavior chart and stayed on green today! She was being silly this morning and wouldn't let me get any great pictures of her first day of kindergarten!

Oliver's Big Day
It's been a truly incredible 24 hours in the life of the Hostert family - so incredible, that Dad (Erik) is writing his first blog post ever on Hostert Happenings. (It will be like her entries but with fewer exclamation marks.)
Tricia didn't feel well yesterday (Friday) and was really concerned about her elevated blood pressure. While sitting with Piper in the ICU, the Doctor on duty noticed her swelling feet and puffy eyes and thought follow up with her Dr. might be a good step. With Piper pretty sedated and stable, we left the hospital, packed up the kids and went to Tricia's hospital to get checked out. The decision was made to induce and Oliver Hostert was born Saturday (today!) at 5:29 PM (yeah!)
Of course, Tricia's labor wasn't quick. She was initially induced Friday night at 10:30 PM - only to deliver 19 hours later. In those hours, I was able to spend some time with Piper in the ICU before getting the 'get here now' call from Tricia. All worked out though - I was able to be with Tricia for the birth of our son - an incredible gift!
Rather than risking a tough drive through huricane Irene, I've elected to stay at the hospital tonight with Tricia and Oliver. First thing tomorrow I'm off to spend some time with Piper. Tricia and Oliver are scheduled to come home Monday.
Oliver is a really awesome kid. I'll leave the details to Tricia, but he's small, cries a little in that newborn 'eh - eh' way and he's a pretty good eater already!
Piper is stable at DuPont and progressing nicely we're hopful that tomorrow they'll be able to move her out of the ICU.
A big shout-out to Dziadzi, Mom Mom, Opa and Oma who are helping us get through a challenging week of child care - honestly, we couldn't do any of this without their awesome help. I hope I can be as good a grandparent someday. And big props to Aunt Linda as well who helped everything come together today - Thanks so much!
Check back tomorrow for pictures... I can't figure out how to get them posted and Tricia is getting some well deserved sleep. Thanks!

Kindergarten Meet and Greet!
This morning Sophia was so excited to meet her new kindergarten teachers. She couldn't wait to go this morning. She was very shy and was holding on to me and wouldn't let go! We found her cubby and met her two new teachers, Mrs. Millard and Mrs. Bunjo! She wouldn't let me take a picture with her new teachers, but I will get one someday! She did finally sit down and play with some toys next to two of her new kindergarten friends! She didn't want to leave, so I am taking that as a good sign. She officially starts kindergarten on Monday! 
Piper's Surgery~ Update #3
Piper is out of surgery! We were able to see her for a few minutes. She is in CICU(Cadiac Intensive Care Unit). We were told to go to the cafeteria for an hour or so while Piper is resting!
We spoke to Dr. Pizarro after Piper's surgery! Erik had everything correct! He fixed her coarctation of her aorta. He widened her entire aorta and that will relieve the blood flow into her lungs. He also fixed her PDA and pulmonary banding! He told us now Piper will be able to gain weight because her heart will not have to work so hard. We will have to come back in a few months for another cath lab to check on the pressure in her lungs. Once we have the information from the cath lab, Dr. Pizarro will decide what he will do to fix the rest of Piper's heart. He said the next surgery will be as complicated as this one! We survived the first heart surgery and we are so relieved! We were told that Piper will be in the hospital for seven to ten days! Let's hope for seven and we can be home together as a family next weekend!!!!

Piper's Surgery~ Update #2
Dad's update... Tricia just go here at 11:45 and is critisizing me for not retaining all of the detail from my updates - but, this is what I know. Of the 3 problems that Piper is dealing with, they were able to address only the most critical today. That is, they were able to widen the aorta which will decrease the pressure on her lungs. This was considered the most important step. Ok - so, that's where things get a little confusing for me, but I think the surgeon is coming back soon to talk with us. So that's good, right? Unfortunately, it looks like we'll need more surgeries to get the rest fixed - but we'll find out soon... Will write more once we know!
